How to Use the Seoul Subway
The subway is usually the easiest way to cross Seoul. A few habits make it much less confusing.
What you need
Use a rechargeable transit card such as T-money. Buy and load it at supported convenience stores or transport facilities; cash requirements can vary by machine and location.
Step by step
- Plan the route with a Korea-friendly map or subway app.
- Check the line number, color and direction.
- Tap in at the gate and keep the same card.
- Follow transfer signs without exiting.
- Tap out at your destination.
Cards, tickets and transfers
A rechargeable transportation card is the simplest choice for most visitors because it works across subway and city bus journeys and supports transfer discounts when used correctly. One card is required per passenger. Single-use subway tickets remain available, but they are less convenient when making several journeys.

At the station
Large stations can have many exits and long transfer corridors. Follow the numbered exit signs rather than leaving through the nearest gate. On the platform, confirm the next station in your direction. If you enter the wrong separated platform, ask station staff before tapping out and paying again.
Common mistakes
- Entering on the wrong side of a station with separated platforms.
- Planning a late route without checking the last train.
- Using one transit card for multiple people.
- Relying only on a station name when several exits are far apart.
